The Kawasaki KLR650 is probably the very best all-around dual-sport motorcycle there is.  All around means price, durability, reliability, performance, and other factors.  Although there may be nicer bikes out there, you can expect to pay three times the price for not much more functionality.  I researched all dual-sport bikes thoroughly before buying.  I have always been a Honda person for all my previous motorcycles.  However, the Honda version sat way too high for me.  I am almost 6' 2" and I had to be on my tippy toes to touch the ground when on the Honda.  That eliminated the Honda real quickly.  Granted, the Kawasaki sits high up too, which is probably a good thing, but I was able to touch the ground comfortably when on the Kawasaki.

An interesting note about the Kawasaki KLR650 is that it is such a good design, that very little has changed about it in 15 years.  The addage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies here very well.  Pretty much all that changes from one model year to the next is the color of the paint on the gas tank.

The KLR650 will take us on the back roads of the country as we travel around.  We want to be able to get into some fairly remote areas and this motorcycle will get us there and back safely and reliably.  The KLR650 handles surprisingly well on the highway and is very smooth at all speeds.  We are excited about the extra places we will be able to access and see now that we have this tool to get us there!
