Breckenridge
Our first week in Breckenridge
was absolutely incredible. This town felt like home to the two of
us right
away. We wasted no time seeing what the town was all about and making
friends with many of the locals right away. We can not believe how
friendly the local folk are here. One person said that the locals open up
and relax right about now as the huge influx of tourists are gone (for a short
while that is). I think Erika's shining personality helps open them up
just a bit. People can't resist her!
We will devote our first week or two getting to know the town. Then we
should branch out to the outlying areas seeing and doing whatever we can find to
see and do. Several have already suggested that whitewater rafting should
be on our short list to do real soon. The snow melt is going to swell
those rivers nicely and Erika and I hope to scare the crap out of ourselves (if
we are lucky)!
The electric bikes came in very handy this week. We used them to scoot
the three miles into town
and to explore the surrounding area. They made
it very easy to get around without having to worry about huffing and puffing up
the hills around here. Remember, it is 9,300 feet here and we have to get
acclimated, so give us a break! The locals as well as the few remaining
tourists were enthralled by the electric bikes. We answered quit a few
questions about them from people of all ages. There was one particular
couple (The Penzias') asking questions that Erika and I bonded with. They
asked questions about the bikes, rode the bikes around a little bit, and asked
many questions about our lifestyle on the road. They were such a sweet
couple. I was interested in Mr. Penzias as much as he was about our bikes.
I could tell he was a special person and I eagerly listened to what he had to
say about several wide ranging subjects. He is one of those people that
when he speaks, you listen so as to not miss a word. After talking for
quite a time and just before parting ways, Mrs. Penzias gave us a hint to look
her husband up on the internet.
ARNO
PENZIAS. He was a Nobel Prize winner in physics in 1978. What an
incredible story his life is! Bravo, Mr. Penzias. Bravo! We are so
glad to have met the two of you. One final note to the reader, Mr. Penzias
is not done yet. He currently is involved with projects that will shape
our lives in the not so distant future.

Erika and I took a hike in the mountains that our RV resort nestles up to.
The scenery was magnificent. The smells and sounds were heaven sent and so
inspiring. Another defining moment happened for me as I completed my long
quest to sit deep into the woods and hear the wind rush through the tops of the
tall pine trees around me. That sound is one of my all time favorite
sounds of my life. It may sound simple to some but to me it holds some of
the keys to understanding what life is all about. For those that don't get
it, I am so sorry for them.
A special treat for us was to spend several precious days with our good
friend and buddy, John Oliver.
We met John during our trip to Quartzsite
in February. John was one of the group of Escapee Boomers who welcomed us
into their lives with open arms. We quickly gravitated towards John drawn
in by his immense friendliness and his big personality. You put two people
who like to talk together, like John and Erika, and it is going to be
entertaining! And it was! We love ya, John! Next round of Coldstone Creamery sundaes is on me! We will sit and eat the sundaes by
the outside fire again at the Irish Pub and watch the moon rise over the
mountains. The perfect blend of fire and ice...and friends.
