Erika Rides The Silver Plume Train

Our day in Silver Plume, Colorado began bitter sweet as Jerry woke up sick but told me to go anyway as we planned the day trip with our friends Bob and Judy.  The train ride was amazing...it was the original path through the mountains that the town folk rode at the turn of the century.  The train would bring people to and from Denver as well. The train operated until 1950's and then shut down.  The rails were pulled up as well.  The restoration began in the 80's when Union railroad donated the necessary rails and the navy volunteered the man power to put the rails back in place.  The train we rode in was the original!!  It operated on an oil engine, not one of coal as was typical of the day. The views were spectacular...imagine what it must've been like 100 yrs ago!!  Back then, there were no trees as they cut them all down to create the town of Silver Plume itself...100 years have passed and the forest is full and lush again...the raging river below, magnificent mountains and incredible smells made this ride a real treat for all of us..We missed you Jerry!!

After the train ride, we went into Silver Plume...what a wonderful surprise...a true step back into history...the roads are still dirt!!  Each building was a magnificent Victorian painted and restored to it's original splendor....I took so many pictures of the individual houses because they were so incredible...the town jail still remains...it closed it's doors in 1921 but of course, I had to take my picture in front of the jail doors!!!  The original school still remains..see the picture I took...I even photographed an old time black and white of one of the first classes to be held there back in the mid 1800's...The first class had 200 students, the last class (1950's) had only 20 students...the school closed its doors then and became the town museum...We loved strolling through this old time town and we truly felt we were transported for the day to a much earlier time...
